Resistance Training for Strength and Bone Density
How do my muscles and bones become stronger as I resistance train?
- The myofibrils in each muscle fiber begin to increase in number. This leads to an increase in diameter of your muscle tissue. With that increase in size, your muscles contract with greater force.
- Your bones have cells (osteoblasts) on the outside that respond to bending forces. When a bone is bent regularly (through pressing weight), those cells lay down collagen. Over time the collagen becomes mineralized (hardens) and new bone is formed. This results in increased bone density.
